John McFadyean and Stewart Stockman

McFadyean and Stockman dominated the veterinary profession in first quarter of twentieth century. McFadyean was a lecturer In Edinburgh and later Dean and Principal of RVC, Stockman, a veteran of The Boer War, was the Chief Veterinary Officer. This is an account of their personal and professional relationship. They were pioneers of farm animal veterinary research, including Epizootic Abortion. They published The Journal of Comparative Pathology and Therapeutics.

An early history of the work of whisperers and toadmen in controlling and managing horse behaviour. An account of a possible secret Society to preserve their knowledge with oaths. The ability to attract and control horses – ‘drawing’ and to stop horses – ‘jading’ or jibbing’. The use of chemical agents, from placentas, rabbits toads and frogs are described.
