Our Mission for the History of Veterinary Medicine
Our mission is to promote understanding of the history of veterinary medicine through research, publications, and events. By studying the past, we help inform the future of the profession.

Our History
The origin of the Veterinary History Society dates back to 1962, when Sherwin Hall and Jack Barber-Lomax convened the inaugural meeting at the Wellcome Historical Medical Library on October 31st.

Their vision: to encourage study and interest in the history of veterinary medicine by sharing experiences and research.

Since then, the Society has convened at veterinary schools, libraries, and heritage sites across the country, contributing significantly to awareness of the veterinary profession’s history.

The Veterinary History Society Committee
The Veterinary History Society committee plays a vital role in advancing our mission. Comprising dedicated historians, veterinarians, and archivists, they oversee our journal, events, membership, and long-term vision.
By exploring the past, we honour those who built the profession – and ensure the future of veterinary care is rooted in knowledge of its origins.
